William Stuart Baxter, known as Stuart, was the son of Elizabeth (Bette) McCardle and Andrew Baxter. His father was a talented artist and in his time, the only art teacher to become a secondary headteacher in Scotland. Bette took time out to raise Stuart and his younger siblings, Neil and Lynn. She had a brilliant mathematical mind and played contract bridge to international standard before stepping back down to club level. They were clever, fun, kindly and caring parents.
